La plupart des lacs albertains datent de la dernière glaciation, il y a 12000 ans. Il y a de nombreux types de lacs en Alberta, des lacs glaciaux dans les Montagnes Rocheuses aux petits lacs peu profonds des prairies, les lacs aux eaux brunes dans la forêt boréale, ou encore les grands lacs aux eaux claires et aux plages sablonneuses dans les plaines centrales.

La distribution des lacs dans la province est irrégulière, avec de nombreux plans d'eau dans les régions humides du nord-est, et très peu dans les Badlands du sud-est.

La zone de Lake Athabasca en Alberta est la plus grande surface d'eau dans la province. Le plus grand lac situé entièrement en Alberta est Lake Claire.

Rivières

Les rivières albertaines s'écoulent dans 3 directions différentes : l'Océan Arctique, la Baie d'Hudson et le Golfe du Mexique. L'Alberta est située immédiatement à l'est de la ligne de division continentale, ainsi aucune rivière albertaine ne s'écoule vers l'Océan Pacifique.

Les rivières du nord de la province s'écoulent vers l'Océan Arctique et ont un débit plus élevé que ceux du sud, qui passent à travers une zone sèche. La plupart des eaux de la moitié sud de l'Alberta s'écoulant vers la Baie d'Hudson, à l'exception de Milk River et de ses affluents, qui s'écoulent à travers le sud du Missouri et du fleuve Mississippi jusqu'au Golfe du Mexique.

Les rivières albertaines du bassin de l'Océan Arctique se rejoignent à Great Slave Lake et Mackenzie River, dans les Territoires-du-Nord-Ouest, à l'exception de Petitot River qui rejoint Mackenzie River via Liard River, sans passer par Great Slave Lake.
